Long Branch Shelter
The shelter is listed as "under construction." Construction by the Nantahala Hiking Club will continue into the summer and potentially into the fall, or later, depending upon a number of variables. Hikers are advised to use either the Big Spring Shelter, 0.6 mile north of Albert Mountain, or Rock Gap Shelter, 5.9 miles north of Albert Mountain, and not plan on using the Long Branch Shelter until it is announced as open. The side trail to the shelter will not be completed until the shelter is ready for use. (3/28/2012)

Bus Travel to Katahdin
Hikers traveling by bus to Medway, Maine (the closest stop to Katahdin) from points between Boston and Bangor are advised to take the Concord Coach Lines www.concordcoachlines.com. Greyhound's Bangor station will be moved April 15; details of the new location have not been announced but connections from Greyhound to the Cyr Bus Line that travels between Bangor and Medway may be more difficult to arrange. Another favorite, the
Appalachian Trail Data Book, is a compilation of less than 100 pages of distances between major landmarks drawn from all 11 official A.T. guides. It is a favorite among section hikers to track their distances and, because it is updated every year, it is a useful tool to verify map information. Resembling a 20th-century railroad timetable with cumulative mileages on either side of the page, it has a north-to-south orientation. It is an essential aid in planning A.T. trips and is the source each December for the new official mileage of the Trail. Current editions can be ordered from the
