"RTK A.T. Challenge" Sets Goal for the Largest Individual Donation to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy

HARPERS FERRY, W.V. (Sept. 22, 2017) - Bruce Matson has set the aggressive goal of raising $200,000 for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) during his hike of the entire Appalachian Trail (A.T.) next year. This challenge, called the “Return to Katahdin A.T. Challenge” (commonly referred to the RTK A.T. Challenge), will be the highest individual monetary contribution ever made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

"Bruce's dedication to the Trail has been an inspiration to us all at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy," said Tiffany Lawrence, vice president of membership and development for the ATC. "His efforts have helped spearhead our new crowdfunding platform, creating a way for all Appalachian Trail lovers to easily raise money to help protect the Trail for generations to come."

ATC member Bruce Matson developed the idea for the RTK A.T. Challenge as a way for both himself and other outdoor lovers to easily donate to the protection of the Trail.

Matson’s efforts are part of his own planned thru-hike of the A.T. next year. While challenging himself to complete the entire 2,190 miles of the Trail, he saw an opportunity to use his hike as a way to raise awareness of the Trail's needs and provide an opportunity for individuals to easily donate to the ATC — all donations to the RTK A.T. Challenge will go directly to the ATC's efforts to protect the A.T. hiking experience.
