Family Hiking Day

  • Dates: 29 – 29 Sep, 2012
  • Location: All Trail Cities, From Maine to Georgia, USA
  • Address: All Trail States
On Saturday, September 29, 2012 the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) invites families to take a hike on the Appalachian Trail. ATC invites people of all ages and hiking abilities to get outside and experience the adventure of being active on the Trail. Studies show that children are spending less time outside each year, and ATC is working to reverse that trend.

Held on National Public Lands Day and coordinating with the Let’s Move initiative, Family Hiking Day is an opportunity to introduce your children to America’s premier footpath, and all of the benefits that come from being active and spending time outdoors.

To help you plan a hike for your family, we have provided:

This will be my 1st time participating in this event and i had a question.I'm  trying to coordinate a hike with my family in the Worthington state park section of the trail come this September.my 3 children will be 3 4 and 5 and i am concerned with the difficulty rating of this section of the trail.does anyone know how rough it is? and also how is the fishing at sun fish pond along this part of the trail? ANY info would be greatly appreciated. Also are their any parts of the trail which are deemed handicap accessible? My brother has mobility issues but would be greatly enlightened to get out and see some of the beauty of the trail as he is the one who got me into camping and long distance hiking.

I backpacked for three days in the Smokies from 8/4-8/7/11 with one of my daughters and son-in-laws and my 6 and 8 yr. old grandsons, hiking 33 miles.  They and other members of my family joined me in TN, NC and GA to help me complete the 2,181 miles of the AT.  I am 82 1/2 yrs. old and started hiking on the AT some 20 plus years ago.  I and one of my grandsons, who drove down from DC to backpack with me reached the summit of Springer Mtn. on 9/4/11.

Many of the hikes have Irene caused problems that may or may not be fixed by 9/24. Check before you go.  http://www.nynjtc.org has the latest info on NY and NJ AT sections.  I know Green Mountain National Forest is completely closed at this point. http://www.greenmountainclub.org/
